Nearly 1,000 climate advocates heading to D.C.

CCL’s 2019 June lobby day

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Nearly 1,000 climate advocates heading to D.C.

June 2, 2023 — With much work still left to meet U.S. climate commitments, nearly a thousand advocates will soon converge on Washington, D.C., for Citizens’ Climate Lobby’s June conference and lobby day, marking the organization’s largest volunteer presence on the Hill since before the COVID-19 pandemic.

At the top of CCL’s agenda is lobbying Congress to pursue additional clean energy permitting reform. Permitting reform is critical if we’re going to make the clean energy transition happen fast enough to meet our climate targets. While some permitting reforms are included in the debt ceiling deal, it is clear more work is needed, and our volunteers will press for additional action.

In a statement about the debt deal, CCL said, “These permitting reforms are not enough. We still need to boost transmission projects and improve early community involvement. But this issue should not just be an add-on — it is important enough to warrant dedicated attention in its own package in the future.”

CCL volunteers will also press for a price on carbon that gives revenue to households and also applies a carbon border adjustment mechanism. This essential tool can close the gap in meeting the U.S. goal of reducing carbon emissions in half by the end of the decade.

WHAT: The 2023 Climate Lobbying Reboot, CCL’s June Conference and Lobby Day

WHEN: June 10-13, 2023

WHO: Featured speakers:

U.S. Rep. Scott Peters (D-CA-50)
Francis Rooney, former Republican Congressman (FL-19) and Ambassador to the Holy See
Rachel Kyte, Dean of the Fletcher School at Tufts University
Jameka Hodnett, Green for All National Campaign Director, Dream.org

WHERE: Omni Shoreham Hotel, 2500 Calvert Street NW, Washington, District of Columbia 20008

WHY: Our democracy works best when we come together to discuss big ideas and reach broad consensus — not when a handful of powerful people make deals behind closed doors. On this annual lobby day and year-round in local communities, CCL’s work brings average Americans into the legislative process, making their voices heard in Congress. This grassroots involvement informs lawmakers on both sides of the aisle as they discuss climate action, which leads to better policy outcomes.
