Despite delay in results, Citizens’ Climate Lobby poised to foster climate action in new Congress

Nov. 9, 2022 – As we await the results of the midterm elections, Citizens’ Climate Lobby (CCL) stands ready to foster robust climate action in the new Congress, whatever its political makeup.

Two months ago, Democrats crafted and passed the Inflation Reduction Act, which is the most ambitious climate legislation so far in U.S. history. A poll conducted by Data for Progress and Climate Power found that “voters overwhelmingly back the Inflation Reduction Act, and the bill’s historic investments in clean energy enjoy bipartisan support.”

No matter how the balance of power swings, it’s clear that climate action can be popular across the political spectrum.

Citizens’ Climate Lobby volunteers have spent recent weeks highlighting the importance of climate change as an election issue. In nearly 2,000 local events and outreach activities, CCLers helped prepare their communities to vote and urged candidates from every party to prioritize climate policy. 

“Our volunteers have shown time and again, no matter who controls Congress, that they can be effective advocates for climate solutions,” said Citizens’ Climate Lobby Vice President for Government Affairs Ben Pendergrass. “We will continue to build on the progress made in this Congress to preserve a livable world. We live in a closely divided country, and we will  need to move legislation in a bipartisan fashion next Congress.”

As a nonpartisan organization, Citizens’ Climate Lobby will continue to meet with both Democratic and Republican lawmakers to urge additional climate progress — whoever holds the power in Congress. Our grassroots volunteers will hold an end-of-year lobbying push in conjunction with our December conference to lay a strong foundation for climate action in the 118th Congress.
