Citizens’ Climate Lobby statement on the Supreme Court’s overturning of Chevron deference

July 5, 2024, Washington, D.C. – Rachel Kerestes, Executive Director of Citizens’ Climate Lobby, issued the following statement in response to the Supreme Court overturning the precedent set in the 1984 Chevron case:

This ruling puts important climate and environmental regulations at risk. That’s a harsh and disappointing reality, but it’s a reality CCL has always been aware of. Courts can strike down regulations and rewrite agency rules at any time — and that’s even more true after this decision. We can’t rely on federal agencies for durable climate action, now that the interpretation of policy is squarely in the unpredictable hands of the courts.

This reinforces the critical nature of CCL’s approach to climate policy. Our staff and broad network of grassroots volunteers advocate for Republicans and Democrats in Congress to find common ground on climate policy. We push them to work together and pass laws that will reduce America’s carbon pollution.

After last week’s ruling, our work is more vital than ever. We will continue to lobby Republican and Democratic lawmakers to pass durable, bipartisan climate legislation. This is the clearest and most reliable path forward to secure long lasting climate action.
