CCL celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month: 2022 festivities

By the Latinos Action Team and Karina Ramirez

Hispanic Heritage Month takes place from Sept. 15 through Oct. 15 each year to celebrate the achievements, histories, traditions, and cultural diversity of Latinos in the United States.

“The observation began in 1968 as Hispanic Heritage Week under President Lyndon Johnson and was expanded by President Ronald Reagan in 1988 to cover a 30-day period. It was enacted into law on August 17, 1988,” according to the U.S. National Archives.

The U.S. National Archives has selected “Unidos: Inclusivity for a Stronger Nation” as this year’s 2022 theme.

The month-long celebration begins on Sept. 15 since Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua celebrate their national independence on that date. Mexico celebrates its independence on Sept. 16, Chile on Sept. 18, and Belize declared its independence on Sept. 21.

At CCL, we will celebrate the month by featuring activities that help bring our communities closer.

We will start the celebration with an acknowledgment of the month during the upcoming Inclusion Conference and celebrate our cultures by showcasing music during the Friday reception as well as sharing art slides during one of the breaks at the conference on Saturday.

This year, the Friday celebrations at 8 p.m. ET will also include the screening of the film “H20-MX” which touches on what it is like to get water to and from the 22 million people of Mexico City.

Sept. 23 – Documentary Film H20-MX
Sept. 30 – Online Loteria (Mexican Bingo)
Oct. 14 – Latino Karaoke (Everyone is invited to bring a song to sing in English or in Spanish.)

Make sure to follow the @ccl.latinos account on Instagram for more information about these events.
